Tips To Keep A Secure Home

By Carl Bedford on April 19, 2011

Keeping a secure home is something you should be interested in regardless of where you live. An unsecure home is one that attracts burglars and other intruders. Once you know how to make your home as secure as possible, you will find it much easier to sleep at night.

The following home security tips are very important:

  1. Install a home security system. Above all else, this is the first thing you should do. With one of these systems the chance of a break-in is much smaller. On top of this, your system can also help detect fire and carbon monoxide in your home. In short, a home security system will make sure that your property is being monitored 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
  2. Let your neighbors know that you have a home security system. Did you know that many break-ins are by neighbors or acquaintances? The more people who know about your system the better off you are going to be. Along with spreading the word yourself, add signage and stickers to the exterior of your home.
  3. Use outdoor lighting. This is an overlooked way to secure your home. Simply put, burglars do not like bright environments because they do not want anybody to see their faces. If you have dark or dimly lit areas outside of your home, add a motion detector. Along with this, there is nothing wrong with leaving lights on all night.
  4. Change your locks. Did you recently move into a new home? If so, make sure you replace the main locks. You never know how many people have keys to your property. You don't have to change every lock, but the main ones should definitely be addressed sooner rather than later. Along with this, change the entry code to your garage door.
  5. Lock your windows. Many people wrongly assume that a burglar will gain entrance through a door. This is not always the case. Make sure that all windows in your home are closed and locked. If just one window is unlocked you are inviting an intruder.
  6. Use a local alarm company. Not only is this a great way to save money on the cost of your home security system, but you will receive much better customer service. If your alarm sounds, you can rest easy knowing that the authorities will be contacted at once.
  7. Plan in advance when you go on vacation. This includes everything from getting timers for lights, letting trustworthy neighbors know that you are out of town, and making sure that your home security system is active. Your vacation will be much more enjoyable when you know that your home is safe and secure.

Anybody can follow these seven simple home security tips. You may be able to think of other ways to secure your home, but this is a great place to start. There is nothing better than knowing that you have a secure home. This gives you peace of mind, knowing that you and your family are going to be safe at all times.
