How To Test The Air Quality In Your Home?

By John Markus on September 06, 2012

An increase in the amount of allergies that your family is suffering or the onset of respiratory trouble without an explanation may be signs of poor air quality in your home. The air quality can be affected by chemicals in your cleaners, because of cigarette smoke or from an unseen, but dangerous, source. Hidden concerns such as mold, mildew and radon can potentially be very harmful to your health, especially when it has time to grow unnoticed. Even the dust that settles around your home may be carrying airborne pathogens that can lead to breathing difficulties. Fortunately, you don't have to wait until you experience breathing problems to question your air quality. There are several methods available for you to test your home, so that you can prevent the negative effects of air quality.

Carbon Monoxide Detector

Carbon monoxide detectors are simple and easy to use. Once you've purchased a detector you'll simply plug it into one of your electric outlets. The detector will monitor the levels of carbon dioxide and when they detect a change, they will sound an alarm. The side effects of carbon monoxide poisoning range from nausea and a racing heart to death, so the device is a very important part of the safety system in your home. They are one of the easiest ways to test the air quality.

Radon Detection Kit

Radon gas may be present in your home if your area has high levels of uranium in the earth. Special kits are available online and can be very affordable priced. The EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) suggests contacting your 'state radon contact' for information about radon testing and for references to the contractors that the state recommends. In some cases your state will provide free radon detection kits. Once you get the kit you'll place it opened somewhere that it won't be bothered and after three days, you simply pack it up and send it to a specified lab while you wait for results.

Mold and Mildew Test

Mold and mildew may be present in large numbers in your attic, behind your walls or in your floors. Unfortunately, by the time you have noticed, the mold and mildew can be pervasive and may require very expensive repairs. Most home improvement stores will stock detection kits. The kit includes a petri dish and instructions for the test. Once again, you'll send the test in to a lab for results. Depending on which of the brands you chose, there could be a fee associated with the lab testing. Most kits are able to provide you with an accurate test of the air quality throughout your home.

Dust Mites

Dust mites are a common problem in many homes and most homeowners may not have to worry about their presence at all. However, there are times when the numbers of the mites are large enough that they become a serious hazard. For the dust mite test, you'll use a small vial in which you can place a sample. As before, the test vial will be sent to a lab to determine the test results.

Once the testing is complete, you'll be prepared to correct any problems. Catching any infestations or the presence of toxins before they have time to spread can save you from serious health problems and may also save you quite a bit of money. If you get positive results back from your tests, you should also receive specific information advising you of the process for improving your air quality and increasing the health of all of your family members.
