If you live in the hustle and bustle of a city then you must be aware that you are not breathing in healthy air. The cars, buses, motor vehicles, other transports and small to large scale industries located in your city all release gas which pollutes the air. Even the smoke released from cigarettes is not good for our environment. All the gas and smoke released contain carbon mono oxide which is poisonous and can be the reason behind many health disorders which includes heart problems, asthma etc. If you are pregnant then many things which you had ignored in the past can be harmful for your child. You just cannot run away from the environment you live in just thinking about your child but you can surely make some adjustments in order to stay healthy. Here are some tips to help you.

  1. In cities mostly morning and evening are the hours when the pollution level is high because this is the time when people head out for their work place and the number of vehicles is also more. You can avoid going out of the house during these hours. Try coming out only in the afternoon or late evenings when the pollution level is low. Early mornings are also good.
  2. You can make use of World Air quality Index and check the pollution percentage before stepping out. Air quality advisory warnings are also provided through email and phone alerts. You can register yourself for the intimation and avoid outdoor exposure during that time.
  3. Many home appliances like furnace, gas heaters, and stoves also release carbon monoxide thus regular checkup and maintenance is very important when pregnant. You can install a carbon monoxide detector in your house to alert you as and when needed.
  4. When we sit inside the car, we close all the windows thinking that now we are not exposed to the pollution outside but if there is any leakage in the exhaust system, it can be harmful. You can keep the vents of the car exhaust closed when driving through heavy traffic. You must also get your vehicle checked on regular basis to ensure that you are not a member among the people responsible for air pollution.
  5. If your house is located in a busy area then keep the door and windows closed when pollution is quite high in the atmosphere.
  6. Adequate amount of fluid will keep your respiratory track moist which is very important to fight with the pollution content in the atmosphere. If you are pregnant then you must drink small amount of fluid on regular intervals.

The air quality in pregnancy period should be free from toxics and particulates Otherwise it may affect the health .of both pregnant woman and baby.
